Here’s the first time lapse video I’ve put together of my collage process. This little 7″x5″ collage took me about an hour and a half to create, but I was able to speed up the process into a 4 minute time lapse video. I’m looking forward to creating a few more of these in the future. And hopefully this gives you a better idea of how I piece together my artwork.
Artwork by the Artist When She Was a Child: Part 2
About a year ago I posted images of artwork I did as a child. Recently I was sifting through more images of artwork from my childhood that I had on my computer, and I figured I’d share them with everyone. I was amused and impressed with the imagination I had as a kid back in elementary school. These pieces were done when I was between the ages of 5 – 7.
The scuba diving piece was done on the back of a menu at a restaurant. It’s of my dad scuba diving – apparently whenever I heard he went on scuba diving trips, I assumed he was lowered into the water in a cage that was always surrounded by sharks. The image on the right shows that I might have began thinking about the story behind Duck & Fish years ago.
The image on the right is supposed to be a picture of my parents getting married. I was amused that I thought my dad wore a top hat when he got married. As a kid, it seemed like most of my drawings of men involved top hats while women always wore pearls and ribbons.
I went through a horse phase where all I drew were horses, like the one above. I also loved drawing pictures of my childhood dog (on the right).
This one made me smile – illustrations of the Ninja Turtles. Love how happy they all look.
Royalty seemed to be one of my favorite subjects – kings, queens, princesses, and princes. I like how this queen has such a long train.
Anyway, I hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend!

Another day, another beagle. What can I say? They’re one of my go-t0-dogs for collaging – just beagles and dachshunds.
Anyway, I had fun working on this small collage. It got me thinking about future projects to work on. I’m hoping to do some work with film and collage soon, as well as begin a new series.
More info will be posted in the upcoming weeks…

Here is the finished piece, inspired by a couple of Golden Retrievers that I saw in Old Town Alexandria. The next piece I’m working on is (surprise, surprise) another dog collage. What can I say, I’m caught up with the same subject matter at the moment. I hope to move away from these furry friends soon and begin another landscape/cityscape series.
Anyway, I hope everyone had a lovely Valentine’s Day and that you’re having a wonderful weekend!

Here’s my latest animal collage. Recently I’ve been busy with a number of art-related and nonart-related things. I’ve decided that I’ll focus on making a series of smaller collages during this time. As a result, I’ll be able to explore a number of different subjects since my smaller works of art don’t take as long to complete as my larger pieces.
Anyway, I hope everyone is having a wonderful December. Can’t believe that it will be 2014 in a matter of days.
British School Caracas, Venezuela
During the past couple of months, I’ve received emails from a number of students from the British School Caracas in Venezuela. The students are working on an art project where they write about my life and also create their own collages. Below are some of the collages the students have made:
It always brightens my day to see collage work by students from around the world.

I recently completed another dachshund collage. Looks like there’s been a bit of a pattern in the subject matter I’ve been tackling…
Anyway in other news, I’m hoping to film my collage process somewhat soon and create a time lapse video. More to come later…
Paper Collage Scapes Exhibit
Over the weekend I worked on installing my exhibit at the Goodwin House in Alexandria, Virginia. The exhibit, “Paper Collage Scapes,” features about thirty of my landscape, cityscape, and a few still life collages. The show includes some of my older pieces as well as some relatively new ones that were completed just last year.
I’ve included images of the installed exhibit so you can get a sense of the space. I sort of like the contrast of the green wallpaper with my artwork framed in black frames with white mats. Anyway, I’m looking forward to returning to the Goodwin House in the next few weeks to give a talk about artwork, process, and experience with self publishing a children’s book.

“Paper Collage Scapes” features a variety of Coyle’s landscape, cityscape, as well as natural still life collages that have been completed over the years. The exhibit even includes several collages that were part of her D.C. Collage Scapes series.
The show explores the intricacies of various buildings and houses in the D.C. area, as well as natural landscapes. Coyle has composed each collage using solid colors and fragments of photographs found in magazines.
This is the second exhibit Coyle has had at the Goodwin House – she is excited to share her work again with the residents and their families.
Collages from Mississippi
This morning I received an email from Ann, an art teacher from Mississippi. She sent me these photos of her 7th grade students with their “Megan Coyle collages.” She told me that she created a lesson plan about my work, showed her students images of my collages, and then had them make their own collages on recycled Masonite boards leftover from the school’s theatre department.
I love it when teachers send images of their student collage art. It’s great seeing what such young artists are able to accomplish with bits and pieces of paper. And it was great seeing another batch of wonderful collages where students embraced the medium – some working mainly with textured magazine strips, some working with solid colors, while others used a variety of both solid and textured. Again, it was fun getting a chance to see these.
