“Collaging the Figure” is one of Megan’s first solo exhibitions that occured during the entire month of March. The show featured figurative collages that she has done within the past several years. With older works of art such as “Orange Girl” and “Girl with Glasses” (which was exhibited at the Smithsonian’s Ripley Center), Megan’s exhibition gave viewers a look at what her collage work looked like when she was just getting started with the medium.

Pieces like “Bren,” “Man at the Market,” “Figure in Front of the Window,” “The Artist from a Distance,” “Figure Seated by the Counter,” and “Smile,” consist of compositions that Megan has worked on within the past couple of years. This exhibition served as a reflection on her previous work, as Megan gets ready for her two upcoming figurative solo exhibitions that will feature a large body of work that moves in a different direction.

Here’s my latest animal piece. The weekend has been a little hectic for me – I was busy getting prepared for a last minute exhibition I’m installing tomorrow morning/afternoon. Not to mention trying to get organized for my larger exhibitions that are coming up in the next few months. Lots of work on mailing lists and mapping out what needs to get done in the next few days.I’m also beginning to make some plans with heading in a different direction with the way I use my blog. I want to continue to use it to post about my projects, recently finished artwork, and exhibitions, but I’d like to turn it into something that is more interactive for readers. I’m thinking of interviewing other artists and posting the interviews here, writing reviews of other exhibitions/museums, and creating a weekly project. It will be a while until I get everything organized, but I’m looking forward to changing gears.

Another zoo-inspired piece. These animal pieces are making me want to start working on a children’s book. Once my hectic schedule of exhibitions passes by after the summer, I’ll have a bit more time to tackle a plot and start thinking up characters. But we’ll see, perhaps I’ll have some time to work on this before then.

Here’s my latest animal collage which is actually quite fitting for me right now – I’m feeling a lot like this guy. D.C. was hit with a snow blizzard, so I’ve been snowed in the past few days just lounging around.

Megan created a collage, “Cup of Joe,” specifically for the Del Ray Artisan’s “Artioms” exhibition. The work of art is available for sale, and is part of her coffee cup series.

“Artioms” includes artwork that expresses idioms, cliches, and word phrases by a variety of local artists. The exhibition showcases what happens when artists play with words through their artwork.

And it’s finished.

I hope everyone had a nice weekend. We had a beautiful snow day on Saturday – much to my surprise, I woke up to a winter wonderland.

I hope everyone had a happy Monday – I’ve been busy working away with record keeping (so yes, it hasn’t been the most exciting Monday ever). I thought I’d share one of my latest pieces that I did for an upcoming exhibition. The show has a theme of words and phrases used in art, so I decided to do a cup of coffee.

Taking High-Quality Photographs of Artwork

This weekend I didn’t get a chance to work on my portable portfolio that much – I just swung by a few stores to pick up supplies for it. Before I start putting together prints for it, I want to take higher resolution pictures of my artwork. Previously, I used an old point-and-shoot Canon camera to take images of my work. I also went outside on nice days to take images. Now, with my higher resolution Nikon camera and my light kit, I can control the lighting for the images and take much crisper and clearer images.

Below are a couple works of art that I retook images of. The collages are actually back from my high school days in 2004, when I used to incorporate oil pastel into my collages. The images with caption 1 are photographs I took with my older camera while the ones with caption 2 are what I took with my newer camera. It’s amazing what a difference it can make when you take better images of your work. So now it’ll take me a while to sift back through my work to take better images – but for documentation’s sake, the work will be well worth it when I’m done. With better photographs, you can get much better prints and have nicer looking pictures on your website.

Yesterday was quite the hectic day – lots of running around doing errands and the gallery meeting went well. Now all I need to do is create enough new artwork for the show in May. I wish I had more time for the deadline, but we shall see what I manage to come up with. I also need to get started with ordering frames for my large 24″x18″ pieces.

Anyway, here’s another animal collage that I’ll possibly use for the August animal exhibition.
